Today I was sad to read that another member of Flowered Up has died. Jonn Robb reports that Joe Maher the bands guitarist has passed away, his brother and lead vocalist Liam died in 2009.
Flowered Up emerged in 1990 and were initially tagged as London’s answer to the Happy Mondays. The band signed a major record deal soon after but sadly their debut album didn’t live up to the expectations of the press or their record label. As is usually the case they were soon dropped by London Records and went back to Heavenly who launched them. Within months the band had their biggest hit with ‘Weekender’ only to split afterwards.
When interviewed in 2005 Liam Maher admitted that the band made a huge mistake signing such a large record deal.
I saw Flowered Up many times, the gigs that stick in my mind are the ones near the end after the release of ‘Weekender’. The last time I saw them was at the Mean Fiddler during Christmas 1992, this was to be the last time they played live until they reformed in 2005. During the reformation they also performed songs by ‘Greedy Soul’ who were Liam Maher’s band from early 2000’s. Unfortunately a planned tour was cancelled and we will never see them again.
