Psychedelia in 2013

For much of the last couple of decades the Psychedelic scene has been full of 50+ year old blokes trying to recreate their teenage years playing covers in pubs (and who can blame them?), then there’s been the dull flute playing of Ozric Tentacles who could cure insomnia in the worst of sufferers. Far more interesting in this period were dance acts like Future Sound of London and The Chemical Brothers whom flirted with many psychedelic sounds in their music alongside all of the Shoegazing bands.

Now I do like a good music scene, growing up it was all about C86, Madchester and Shoegazing, so I was pleased to see in the NME this week a feature about the ‘Global Psych Scene’, surely a name that’s not going to take off but still containing some rather excellent music.

I could witter on about the new crop of bands, instead I’ve compiled a rather excellent playlist featuring a load of the current bands who fit into this sound. Also below is the video for the debut single by Temples, you’ll be hearing a lot more of them in the next year or so.

Tracklisting for the playlist is:
Lorelle Meets The Obsolete – Waitin’ for the Orange Sunshine
Jacco Gardner – Clear The Air
K-X-P – Staring At the Moon
Temples – Prisms
Tame Impala – Feels Like We Only Go Backwards
Follakzoid – Rivers
The Horros – Still Life
The Black Angels – Melanie’s Melody
The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Panic In Babylon
Holydrug Couple – Follow Your Way
Melody’s Echo Chamber – You Won’t Be Missing That Part of Me
Toy – Make It Mine
The Time And Space Machine – Pill Party in India
Hookwarms – Teens Dreams
Dead Mellotron – Babe
Psychic Ills – Aldebaran
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Swim and Sleep
