I’m genuinely saddened to have just heard the news about Lou Reed who died today at 71.
From the release of ‘Andy Warhol’ in 1967 until his work with Gorillaz in 2010 (where he got to play the main stage at Glastonbury) Lou Reed released many great records.
The Velvet Underground & Nico’s ‘Andy Warhol’ is without doubt one of my favourite albums alongside being possibly the most influential album of the last century with most of the great bands of the last 30 years using their sound and style as a template.
I was fortunate enough to see the original line-up of the Velvet Underground on their 1993 reunion tour, they were disappointing (as the band would admit) but it would have been far worse to have never seen them live. Along the way there was also ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ and ‘Perfect Day’ which was brought to the mainstream in the 1996 film Trainspotting.
