Steve Mason Alive at The Barbican

Steve Mason Alive at The Barbican

This year marks 20 years since The Beta Band released their first EP, so it was with much excitement that I headed off to The Barbican last week to watch Steve Mason playing a career defining set.

I think I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping there’d be some kind of reunion on the night but once he hit the stage all thoughts of The Beta Band joining him were forgotten. Opening with ‘It’s Not Too Beautiful’ joined onstage by Joe Duddell and ensemble, the sound was phenomenal and fitted perfectly with the surroundings.

From the start the gig seemed a real celebration and you could sense the warmth in the room the audience had for Steve. Playing two sets over two and a half hours there wasn’t a boring moment and started a week long marathon of listening to his back catalogue again for me.

If there ever was a reunion by The Beta Band it’ll never sound this good.
